Honest Skin Assessment

If your skin is not ideal for microblading, we will recommend Breath Brows™ instead.

What is microblading, technically?

Microblading is a manual technique. The artist opens a fine cut — a controlled micro-scratch — in the superficial dermis with a row of tiny blades, then deposits pigment inside that cut, working in two passes: first the incision, then a second pass to saturate the colour. Because each stroke is a real cut, the result is highly defined and uniform: every hairstroke has the same thickness and the same intensity.

This makes microblading an excellent choice when the natural brow already has a good, evenly distributed base of hair with normal diameter — the manual strokes integrate cleanly with what is already there. On sparse, mature, oily or very thin skin, the same cut tends to migrate or blur over time, which is why we will often recommend a machine technique instead.

Manual blade vs machine: the technical difference

The defining difference: a blade cuts the skin, a machine does not. A machine hairstroke pricks the dermis with thousands of ultra-fine impacts that build each stroke as a gradient of pigment dots. The blade gives more definition and uniformity; the machine gives less trauma, finer control of depth, and better long-term behaviour on difficult skin. For a deeper comparison see our guide on microblading vs nano brows.

Shape, colour and pigment composition

Brow shape is decided not only on the PhiBrows golden ratio but on a careful reading of facial morphology, bone structure, the direction of your existing hair and any muscular asymmetry. The golden ratio is the framework; your face is what tells us where the brow actually belongs.

Pigment colour is chosen according to skin thickness, tone and undertone. The same pigment heals differently on different clients, because the final colour is the sum of what we deposit plus the colour of the dermis above it — every skin has a different concentration of melanocytes. The composition itself is selected to suit your skin type and to favour a delicate, natural finish, not just to match a colour swatch.

When microblading is the right choice

Microblading suits normal-to-dry skin that holds pigment cleanly and isn't prone to spreading. For oily, mature, very thin or previously-treated skin, a machine technique (Breath Brows™ or Latin Brows) is usually a better long-term decision. We will always advise honestly, even if it means steering you away from a service.
